Acupuncture awareness week (3-10 March 2014)
“Acupuncture for musculoskeletal conditions  and  Back pain”
‘Musculoskeletal conditions’ is a broad term, encompassing around 200 different conditions affecting the muscles, joints and skeleton. Around 10 million adults, and around 12,000 children, have a musculoskeletal condition in England (DH 2006).
Acupuncture has been proven to be effective in the treatment of a wide range of disorders of the musculoskeletal system. The treatment of a condition is not limited to seeing it as just a local problem (lower back pain etc.). If the patient has constitutional weaknesses, no matter how much local treatment is done on eg the lower back, the problem will reoccur. Pain, stiffness, swelling and soreness in muscles and joints are the result of an obstruction of body fluids and energy, causing problems to the normal function of the whole body. The inserting of fine needles into specific points by an acupuncturist can help to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
Acupuncture has been found to be beneficial in cases in which analgesics and anti-inflammatory medications have been ineffective or have demonstrated side effects, and in cases in which surgery was not recommended. If the conditions are degenerative, acupuncture cannot provide a ‘cure’, but can provide symptomatic relief with increased movement, often over an extended period.
Acupuncture is recommended in the National Institute for Health & Clinical Excellence (NICE) guidelines for back pain treatment. It is also regularly used in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions such as Sciatica, Carpal Tunnel (wrist/hand), Stroke, Arthritis, Tendonitis, Sprain and Strains, Sport injuries, Neck pain, Arm pain, Bell’s Palsy, Tennis Elbow, Fibromyalgia, Jaw pain &/or teeth grinding, Knee pain, Shoulder pain, Myofascial pain.
